'They were struggling': Mario Melchiot names two Chelsea players who don't understand English football
Former Chelsea player Mario Melchiot fears that the likes of Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi do not understand the English game yet.
Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi started in central defence together in Chelsea‘s 2-0 loss to Everton last Sunday, and Mario Melchiot questioned on ESPN FC whether the pair knew what they were walking into when they arrived at Goodison Park.
While Chelsea only signed Disasi in the summer, the 25-year-old and Badiashile are no strangers.
They played alongside each other at AS Monaco, but their connection did Mauricio Pochettino no favours when his side travelled to Merseyside.
Former Premier League manager Alan Pardew even suggested that Chelsea actually look like a worse side without Thiago Silva, who had to make way so that Badiashile and Disasi could start at the heart of the Blues’ defence.
Mario Melchiot unsure if Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi are adapting to the Premier League
After the Everton game, Melchiot is wondering if the likes of Badiashile and Disasi have come to understand what Premier League football is actually about.
Discussing the French duo on ESPN FC, he said: “Sometimes I ask myself, do they understand what really is going to be asked of them because I’m not talking about the quality of the players, but I’m asking about the mentality and what is expected when they come into that stadium because the way Everton played against them, they sat back, waited for them and just hit them on the break and kept on fighting and winning every second ball and making sure they were struggling.
“And that’s why I ask myself sometimes, you know like players, I give an example. Badiashile, Disasi, I’m not talking about that those are not quality players, but are they really informed in the sense of regardless if you played well in France, but now you’re in England, are they informed of what to expect when they go to that stadium that is not going to be a normal situation that they’re going to enter and say like, ‘Oh, we can do this.’ “

Chelsea signings not adapting to the Premier League
Honestly, Badiashile has been pretty solid since he arrived at Chelsea, but you can still see where Melchiot is coming from when you look at some of the club’s other recent signings.
Take Mykhailo Mudryk, for example. He has really struggled at Stamford Bridge, failing to score a goal for the Blues at all last season after arriving from Shakhtar Donetsk.
But the thing is, Chelsea’s latest signings from within the Premier League have not exactly been sensational either.
Moises Caicedo has not made much of an impact this season, while Raheem Sterling and Marc Cucurella’s first year at the club was one to forget.
