Danny Murphy shares where Chelsea would be in the PL table right now if Christopher Nkunku didn't get injured

Danny Murphy has suggested that Christopher Nkunku’s absence for most of the season so far has made a real difference to Chelsea.

Christopher Nkunku completed his move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea last summer, but this first campaign in English football has been wrecked by injuries.

The 26-year-old attacker suffered an unfortunate knee injury in pre-season, which resulted in him missing the first few months of the 2023/24 campaign.

Since his return to action in mid-December, Nkunku has made four appearances for the Blues. He managed to score his first competitive goal for the club in a Premier League defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unfortunately, the French forward is sidelined again right now with a hip problem. However, Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino has already said it’s not a serious issue.

Speaking via 90min this week, Pochettino explained that the club are being cautious with Nkunku and he will be assessed before this weekend’s league game versus Fulham.

TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has made an interesting claim about Nkunku and Chelsea.

He’s said that the Blues would be a few places higher up the league table if the summer signing didn’t get injured.

Pochettino’s side sit 10th in the league standings staring at another mid-table finish, but Murphy thinks they could have been up in the European spots in sixth of seventh with a fully fit Nkunku.

Murphy told talkSPORT (10:23am): “The only player they’ve signed you could argue has got a CV is Nkunku and he’s been injured. He’s the one who’s had a couple of seasons of a high level.”

He later added (10:38am): “I believe if Nkunku, who was brilliant in pre-season, if he had started the season I think Chelsea would be sitting sixth or seventh.”

Christopher Nkunku injury

We agree that Nkunku’s absence has really hurt Chelsea this season, but it’s not an excuse for the overall performances or results.

Let’s remember it’s only his first year in English football as he adapts to the Premier League, so relying on him to score the bulk of the goals was always a risky strategy.

We hope he can get fit and enjoy a strong second half of the season. But the burden needs to be shared to try get the side up the table.
