'Didn’t quite believe it': Levi Colwill says he was shocked by what Reece James did before one Chelsea game

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and Reece James shared a moment this season that the former will never forget.

Reece James informed Levi Colwill in the Old Trafford dressing room that the 20-year-old would captain Chelsea for their game against Manchester United, and Colwill has now told the Blues’ official website that he could not believe it.

In the end, it was a disappointing day for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side, who went on to lose 2-1.

However, it was obviously still a very proud moment for Colwill, with the central defender getting to captain his boyhood club at just 20 years of age.

Levi Colwill could not believe Reece James

For Colwill, it was such a surprise to find out from James that he would lead Chelsea out at Old Trafford.

On being named captain for the game, the England international said: “I found out in the changing room because Reece [James] came up to me, which meant a lot.

“I didn’t actually believe him at the start but then he showed me the armband on my shirt. I didn’t quite believe it and it probably was a good thing. If I had time to think about it, it might’ve affected me a bit.

“I gave the team talk and I think my first word was a bit shaky – I wasn’t looking at anyone – but then I got into it and I think it was good. I tell the boys I think I’m up there for team talks now, maybe second best!”

Is Levi Colwill a future Chelsea captain?

There is a good chance that Colwill becomes Chelsea skipper one day. He is already gaining experience as a captain and knows the club so well.

Colwill is on a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge, too, so he should be on Chelsea’s books for years to come.

He is already a key player for Pochettino, making 19 appearances in the Premier League this season, and has proven to be a very versatile asset after playing at both left-back and centre-back. However, Colwill recently hinted that his future is in central defence.

Next up for Colwill and Chelsea is a third round FA Cup tie against Preston North End.
