‘Has to start’: Chelsea fans urge Mauricio Pochettino to give 20-year-old his full debut vs Preston
Chelsea youngster Alfie Gilchrist has started to get his first taste of senior football within the last couple of weeks.
Alfie Gilchrist, 20, made his first-team debut in Chelsea’s league win over Crystal Palace on 27 December.
Similarly, the Blues defender yet again came off the bench for another late cameo appearance in last weekend’s victory over Luton Town.
There’s now plenty of fans on social media that have urged Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino to hand Gilchrist a full debut this weekend.
They want the 20-year-old to make his first start in men’s football when the Blues host Preston on Saturday evening in an FA Cup third-round tie.
Chelsea fans want Alfie Gilchrist to start against Preston
Despite playing regularly for Chelsea’s Under-21s team this season, we’ve seen Gilchrist around the first-team group a lot more in recent weeks.
He’s a highly-rated centre-back that is good with the ball at his feet and defends aggressively. However, his brief minutes so far in Pochettino’s side has been at right-back.
There’s transfer speculation that links the Blues academy graduate with a first ever loan move this month. Can he make a first start before exiting the building, though?
Journalist Simon Phillips reported via Substack earlier this week that Championship club Millwall hold an interest in signing Gilchrist on loan for the rest of the season.
Here are some Chelsea fans on X that all believe Gilchrist should be handed his full debut this evening versus Preston.
