'Ridiculous': Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both agree on one thing about Chelsea

It’s pretty universally agreed that Chelsea’s 2023 was a big failure.

Pundits Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards certainly agree when it comes to Chelsea over the last year.

The Blues finished the previous calendar year with back-to-back wins in the Premier League and qualification for the Carabao Cup semi-finals, but that’s not enough to paper over the cracks of another turbulent 12 months under this ownership.

We’ve seen numerous faces in the manager’s dugout, with Mauricio Pochettino the latest man trying to find a tune from a very young and expensive squad.

Let’s hope Chelsea start their 2024 with a bang tomorrow when they host Preston in an FA Cup third-round tie at Stamford Bridge.

Lineker, Shearer and Richards all came to the same answer on The Rest Is Football podcast when picking the biggest underachievers of the year.

Lineker said: “I’m going to have to say Chelsea. The amount of money they have spent, they are definitely underachieving.

Shearer agreed: “It’s going to have to be Chelsea, with the ridiculous amount of money that has been spent there for them to be still be in mid table, one week you think they’re okay, the next you think how bad are they. It has to be Chelsea.

Richards added: “Yeah, agreed – it’s a triple threat. We’re all Chelsea. The players they have as well, they have some really talented players.”

Chelsea underachieved in 2024

Speaking on the Seaman Says podcast this week, David Seaman also named Chelsea as the biggest underachievers of 2023.

Let’s hope the only way is up for a young group that does still possess a lot of quality.

We’ll consider the second half of this season a failure if they fail to qualify for Europe, but it’s still within their reach if they get their act together.

It’ll be a travesty if Chelsea go the whole of 2024 without any European football!

There’s reason to be optimistic moving forward when you’ve got talents like Cole Palmer getting better and better.
