'I heard': £43m player is now set to sign new contract despite Chelsea interest - David Ornstein

Chelsea and Real Madrid both look set to miss out on Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies.

Alphonso Davies is a player who Chelsea are interested in, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

However, in a Q+A session for The Athletic, David Ornstein revealed that there is an expectation that the left-back will sign a new deal at Bayern.

Back in October, SportBild claimed that Real Madrid could have ended up paying up to €50m (£42.7m) for Davies.

But it now looks like the Canada international will be remaining at the Allianz Arena.

Alphonso Davies expected to stay at Bayern Munich despite Chelsea and Real Madrid interest

Davies appears to be edging closer to a Bayern stay.

On the former Vancouver Whitecaps player, Ornstein said: “The Real Madrid interest is well documented, but the last I heard the Bayern Munich contract proposal was superior. So unless that has changed or does subsequently, the expectation is that he will renew.”

Chelsea could still sign a new left-back this summer

Even if Chelsea do go on to miss out on Davies, it would not be a surprise to see them still enter the market for a left-back and sign someone else.

It is obviously a position where they have had a lot of problems this season.

In fact, Levi Colwill, who is not even a natural left-back, has just picked up an injury. It comes at a time where Marc Cucurella is unavailable.

Ben Chilwell has just returned from the sidelines as well, so Mauricio Pochettino has to be careful with him. The Argentine opted to start him on the bench in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday.

Do not rule out Chelsea signing a new left-back, then, though Davies arriving at Stamford Bridge currently looks unlikely.
