‘Keep running’: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says 22-year-old Chelsea man did not do his job in EFL Cup last night

Pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has claimed that one Chelsea player was at fault for the club conceding last night against Middlesbrough.

He told Sky Sports that he believes Moises Caicedo can be blamed for how the Blues conceded the only goal of the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.

Chelsea have given themselves a tough task at Stamford Bridge of booking their place at Wembley in a few weeks’ time after they were beaten 1-0 by their Championship opposition.

They realistically should have been ahead in the first half, after Cole Palmer was presented two glorious chances which he couldn’t find the net with.

He was starting in the striker role, an experiment that seemed to fall flat on it’s face in the biggest game of the season.

One player who on the whole had a good game was Caicedo, with his ability to recover the ball second to none.

Hasselbaink blames Caicedo

However, Hasselbaink believes that it was the 21-year-old who could have done more to help stop the only goal of the game.

He said: “Could have been avoided. It’s a little bit lucky because it goes through the legs of Colwill, but Caicedo he has to keep running with Hackney, he has to stay with him. That is his job.

“He stops, he’s expecting a cross and putting his hands behind his back so it doesn’t hit his arms. He’s more concerned with that than sticking with his man. He needs to keep on running with his man, and then it’s not a goal.”

Chelsea will need to be perfect from the off in two weeks’ time when they face last night’s opponents again at Stamford Bridge.

This is realistically the best chance of silverware they have this season, and given the fact that Pochettino is without a trophy during his time in England, he may be feeling the pressure to turn things around in the second leg.
