Report: Chelsea ready to bid £25m this week to sign midfielder who starred against them this season

Reports have claimed that Chelsea are now ready to make a bid this week to sign a midfielder they have already come up against this season.

According to The Sun, the Blues have entered the race to sign Blackburn Rovers youngster Adam Wharton in the final few days of the transfer window.

Wharton has enjoyed a strong second season in the Championship so far, playing near enough every game so far during this campaign.

In the EFL Cup earlier this season, Chelsea hosted Blackburn in what turned out to be one of their roadblocks on the path to Wembley for the final they qualified for last week.

Despite the 2-0 scoreline, there were plenty of scares for the Blues along the way as they made tough work of their lower league opposition.

One player who starred that day was Wharton, and that performance has reportedly stuck with the club as they enter the transfer window again.

It has now been claimed that club chief Paul Winstanley went to watch the 19-year-old play recently as they scouted him as a potential signing.

The central midfielder would arrive to a congested scene already at Stamford Bridge, with there being plenty of young stars ready to take their chance if handed one at some point this season.

Behind Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo who are guaranteed starters for the club at this point, Romeo Lavia, Andrey Santos, Lesley Ugochukwu and Cesare Casadei are waiting in the wings, with only injuries stopping the former from having a bigger part to play so far.

This may suggest that his signing is made with the intention of loaning him out again. Given the fact fellow Premier League sides are interested in signing him, they should have no issue finding a top club to give him regular playing time.
