‘Today’: Mauricio Pochettino now gives his verdict on whether Malo Gusto should have been sent off vs Fulham
Chelsea defender Malo Gusto was shown a yellow card for a bad tackle in his side’s 1-0 win against Fulham yesterday.
After watching replays of the challenge, it could have been a red card on another day and Mauricio Pochettino has now given his thoughts on the incident.
The Argentine spoke to football.london and other publications after the game.
It was a tight affair, but Chelsea were just about able to scrape the win thanks to Cole Palmer‘s ninth Premier League goal of the season, which came from the penalty spot.
At the end of the match, Peter Crouch claimed that it is a joy to watch the 21-year-old.
Mauricio Pochettino discusses Malo Gusto incident
Unsurprisingly, Pochettino did not think Malo Gusto‘s yellow card was anything more than that.
When asked if the right-back’s tackle on Willian was a yellow or red, the Chelsea manager said: “Yellow card because it was yellow card. Remember against Aston Villa it was red card and I didn’t complain about that and today was yellow card.”

Malo Gusto needs to be more careful
As Pochettino highlighted, Gusto was sent off for a similar challenge against Aston Villa earlier this season. And honestly, when watching back his tackle on Willian, he easily could have been sent off.
Going forward, the Frenchman needs to exercise a bit more control when he is trying to win the ball back.
Gusto really could have put Chelsea in a bad position had Anthony Taylor shown him a red instead of a yellow.
It could have been costly in the long run as well, not just against Fulham. With Reece James injured, Gusto is the main option for the right-back position at this moment in time.
Marc Cucurella has shown that he can play at right-back, but the Spaniard is also sidelined, while Axel Disasi, who has started there as well this term, is not a full-back. The Blues lose quite a bit of their attacking threat when he is on the right flank.
