'I've seen': Jamie Carragher delivers his verdict on Graham Potter replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager

If England need to hire a new boss, there are quite a few former Chelsea managers lying about.

England had a good Euro 2024 campaign, reaching Sunday’s final where they narrowly lost 2-1 to Spain.

Even so, it looks like there is a possibility of Gareth Southgate departing the Three Lions.

His contract expires in December and the 53-year-old was coy on his future when asked about it.

“Now is not the time for me to speak about that,” he told BBC Sport.

If there is a parting of the ways, former Chelsea bosses Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are all available. Simon Jordan has his doubts about Frank Lampard becoming the new England manager, though, with the Chelsea legend also without a job at the moment.

Jamie Carragher on Graham Potter

While Jordan has his concerns about Lampard, Carragher has his with Potter.

The Liverpool legend feels that he struggled too much during his time at Chelsea.

In his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said: “Those who believe the Southgate era has run its course cannot be sure there is anyone better who would want to replace him, or prove better suited for the job.

“I’ve seen Graham Potter’s name mentioned, but he struggled under pressure at Chelsea. Others believe England should look to an overseas coach again. No. We tried that before and it did not bring success.”

Which former Chelsea manager should England prioritise if Gareth Southgate leaves?

Potter is not the worst appointment the FA could make.

The 49-year-old obviously knows English football well and did a good job at Brighton & Hove Albion, hence his move to Chelsea, who were clearly impressed with his work at the Amex Stadium.

However, Pochettino and Tuchel are much better options, having managed big dressing rooms and won trophies.

Potter did the former at Chelsea, but that was only for a short period after he was sacked extremely early into his long-term contract.

Ultimately, if England are open to appointing a foreign manager, then Pochettino or Tuchel could be the direction to go in.
