Chelsea leave ‘outstanding’ player who started vs Man City out of Conference League squad - journalist

Chelsea’s return to football will not just be on the Premier League front in the early weeks of the season.

The Blues get their Conference League campaign underway later this week when they take on Servette to qualify for a place in the European competition proper.

It looks as if Enzo Maresca is not going to make too many changes to the side as he looks to secure their place in Europe for the upcoming campaign.

While Chelsea were defeated 2-0 at Stamford Bridge by Manchester City, there were a number of individuals who impressed on a personal level.

One of those was Wesley Fofana, who was making his first competitive appearance of any kind in over a year.

Wesley Fofana left out of Chelsea’s Conference League squad

However, it looks as if he is not going to get the opportunity to continue this start to the campaign in Europe.

According to Nizaar Kinsella, the Frenchman has been left out of the side who can take on Servette on Thursday.

He said: “Chelsea’s A list for the Conference League match against Servette:

Must stress this is for one match only but not featured: Sterling, Tosin, Chilwell, W Fofana.”

There are no doubt plenty of advocates for how good a fully fit Fofana can be, with him previously being described as ‘outstanding’ by Jeff Stelling.

The good news for Fofana is that this is only the squad who have been named to play the first leg of the qualifier, and therefore does not mean he cannot feature at all in the competition if they do get through.

Chances for Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi

The backline is certainly going to undergo some changes from the opening day defeat, and there may be a chance for players who didn’t feature at all to get their opportunity.

One of those is Benoit Badiashile, who featured regularly during the pre-season tour of the United States.

Another is Axel Disasi, who was left out completely at the weekend as Maresca faced some tough decisions about who he could name in the matchday squad for the Premier League.
