'Very good': Enzo Maresca confirms he's already been very impressed by £100k-a-week Chelsea player

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has shared that one player has been just as good as he expected since he started working with him this summer.

Enzo Maresca, 44, has now been in his position as the new head coach for over a month now. He’s the latest Italian manager to take the reigns at Chelsea and he’ll be hoping to enjoy as much success as his predecessors.

Incidentally, speaking on John Obi Mikel’s ‘Obi One Podcast’ this week, Carlo Ancelotti tipped Maresca to succeed at Chelsea.

There’s no doubt that Maresca is inheriting a talented squad of players to work with, albeit they’re very young and without much experience. It’s interesting to hear him admit that one Blues defender has already caught his eye in a positive way this summer.

Enzo Maresca impressed by Levi Colwill

Chelsea’s boss has singled out Levi Colwill, 21, as a real positive. He’s confirmed that the English central defender has been impressive during his first month coaching him.

“I know Levi (Colwill) is very good and he is showing what I expected,” Maresca told The Athletic.

For any new individual arriving into the manager’s dugout at Chelsea, the quality youngsters on the club’s books must be one of the most exciting things. It’s even better when stars such as Colwill and Reece James are homegrown talents from the academy, too.

Does Levi Colwill make Chelsea’s best XI?

There’s certainly a lot of defensive options for Maresca to choose from when everyone’s fit and firing at Chelsea. However, Colwill’s inclusion in the best starting line-up feels like a safe guess.

The £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) left-footed Englishman is a ball-playing centre-half with so much quality in and out of possession. On paper, the appointment of Maresca this summer is tailor-made for him to be a success.

It’s up to the 21-year-old youngster to find a consistency in his game that wasn’t always there last season, but it was still a relatively strong debut campaign in Chelsea’s first team. He’s a towering defender who’s best position is at centre-back, so there should be room for him in the XI come the start of the season.
