‘We had some problems’: Enzo Maresca shares what Chelsea struggled with in pre-season loss vs Real Madrid

Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the United States concluded in pretty much the same underwhelming fashion that it started a few weeks ago.

The Blues were defeated in their final friendly across the pond 2-1 by Real Madrid, however it is fair to say some individual players will have impressed Enzo Maresca impressed with their performances.

Noni Madueke in particular looked really promising, as he pushes for a start in the opening game of the Premier League season against Manchester City.

The champions outclassed Chelsea last weekend, and Maresca will be more than aware where the issues lie coming into the new season.

He said in an interview on Chelsea’s official website that while he believes the attack flourished last night, defensively there are still things that need a lot of work in the next 10 days.

Maresca says Chelsea need to work on defence

He said: “I think offensively we played a good game but defensively we had some problems that we need to solve and adjust.”

Club captain Reece James will not be available for the first few games of the campaign as a result of his suspension carrying over from last season.

This will likely see Malo Gusto, who has shown off his versatility throughout this summer, start at right-back for the first game of the season.

Marc Cucurella training at Cobham

Marc Cucurella has been completing his pre-season at Cobham, and will likely be back in the starting side when City make the trip to Stamford Bridge.

The centre-back positions are the ones where there are the most questions over going into next season, with a lot of players picking up minutes in the friendlies.

One player who hasn’t featured though is Axel Disasi, who recently returned to training after suffering from injury problems through the summer.

Chelsea fans will be hoping the club spend the next few days really working on things at the back, with the plethora of goals they have conceded this summer an issue even if it is just pre-season.
