'Different': Lee Carsley reacts to the England debut from Chelsea star Noni Madueke

Lee Carsley handed Chelsea star Noni Madueke his senior England debut yesterday in the Nations League win over Finland.

England captain Harry Kane marked his 100th cap for his country with an excellent brace in the 2-0 victory against Finland at Wembley Stadium. In contrast, Noni Madueke started his journey in the senior team by earning his first cap on Tuesday evening.

Madueke, 22, earned his first ever senior call-up during this international break because of his excellent start to the season with Chelsea. He’s scored four goals in his opening four games across all competitions for the Blues.

The right-winger replaced Bukayo Saka midway through the second half versus Finland, and he made an immediate impact on his Three Lions debut by assisting Kane’s second goal after a clever passage of play.

He should return to Stamford Bridge now with an extra spring in his step following a successful international break.

Lee Carsley reacts to Noni Madueke debut

Lee Carsley, the interim England manager, praised Chelsea’s Madueke after his impact on Tuesday night in the Nations League.

Interestingly, he commented that the Blues wide man adds something “different” to the side. It must help that the duo know each other well after previously working together in England’s Under-21s team.

“Noni has carried on where he left off at Chelsea. He is very attacking, very sharp. Different to what we have got, different kind of wide player,” Carsley said, as quoted by talkSPORT (10:23pm, 10 September).

“When you consider that Bukayo [Saka] had a run at the full-back for 60 odd minutes, Noni comes on and carries it on, so you wouldn’t want to be a defender playing against them two.”

Chelsea winger making giant strides

Madueke, who joined Chelsea back in January 2023, has shown flashes of brilliance so far in west London. There’s no doubt that the youngster’s still incredibly raw and looking for consistency, though.

Based on his start to the 2024/25 campaign, it feels like things are finally clicking into gear for him.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on his podcast last month that Chelsea considered selling Madueke this summer before changing their minds. It’s a good job they performed a U-turn, too.

If Madueke can keep producing an end product like this, he’s going to make a real name for himself this season, with a bright future for both club and country.
