'Sources have said': How Todd Boehly really feels about Chelsea's academy - journalist

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has found himself in the headlines over the last few days.

It has been claimed that Todd Boehly has an incredible vision for Chelsea, though it may never come to fruition amid reports of an ongoing power struggle at the club.

Boehly, of course, is not the sole owner of Chelsea, with Clearlake Capital actually owning over 60% of the Premier League outfit.

It means that the American cannot make any final decision on his own in west London. Nevertheless, Boehly is still thought to “love” Chelsea and elements of the club.

Todd Boehly’s view of Chelsea academy

It is fair to say that Chelsea were not too kind to some of their academy products during the summer.

They forced Trevoh Chalobah out of the club, while Conor Gallagher was sold to Atletico Madrid, despite being such a key player for the Blues last season.

However, according to journalist Simon Phillips, Boehly is a supporter of the Chelsea academy and sees its value.

Speaking about the Chelsea co-owner on Substack, Phillips said: “Boehly has always been an advocate for the Chelsea academy too, and sources have said that he instantly fell in love with the club and understood what it represents and how important things like the academy are.”

Chelsea still want to sign the best youngsters in the world, though, which will not help those in the academy who are aiming to break into the first team.

Chelsea still have academy graduates in their squad

Chelsea received a lot of backlash for offloading Gallagher and exiling Chalobah, with many feeling that such players were the soul of the club.

However, the Blues did not get rid of all of their academy graduates. Levi Colwill and Reece James are still at Chelsea, and the former has proven to be a key player in this early part of the season.

Colwill has started all three of the Blues’ Premier League games so far, helping him to win a recall to the England national team.

Colwill won plaudits for his performance in England’s 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland and is proof that there is room for Chelsea academy graduates in Enzo Maresca‘s squad.
