What Villarreal's CEO has now said about Filip Jorgensen's transfer to Chelsea
Villarreal CEO Fernando Roig Negueroles has been speaking about Filip Jorgensen’s transfer to Chelsea over the summer and how it surprised him.
Despite already having Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic, Chelsea decided to sign Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.
His move forced Petrovic out of the club, with the Serbian currently out on loan at Strasbourg, but he has not managed to take Sanchez’s spot in the team.
The 26-year-old has started all three of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far, and Enzo Maresca plans to stick with Sanchez for the time being.

Fernando Roig Negueroles surprised by Filip Jorgensen’s transfer to Chelsea
Jorgensen was one of the top-performing goalkeepers in La Liga last season. In fact, according to FBref, he made the most saves in the division after recording 143.
Even so, Villarreal’s CEO was not expecting the 22-year-old to be sold in the summer and thinks he was a bit “hasty” to join Chelsea.
In an interview with AS, Roig Negueroles said: “We didn’t expect to sell Jorgensen so soon, and even less so this year. We knew of his enormous potential and we thought he would leave, but not now. Honestly, and I have made this clear to him and to those around him, I think Jorgensen was hasty. Here he had room for improvement and growth, but his departure was the player’s will.
“We didn’t intend to make that sale, but it happened this way because he is a great goalkeeper for the present and the future and with qualities that can make him one of the most important goalkeepers in Europe. I don’t regret his departure, these are football situations.”
Jorgensen has not been bitter about Maresca leaving him on the bench in Chelsea’s Premier League campaign. Last month, Jorgensen actually praised Sanchez, believing that the Spaniard is doing a good job in goal.
Filip Jorgensen can become Chelsea’s No.1
While Jorgensen is yet to play a top-flight game for Chelsea, the Denmark U21 international started in both of the Blues’ matches against Servette in the Conference League, really impressing in the first leg of the play-off tie.
That night, he was the highest-rated player on Sofascore, earning an 8.4 match rating. In total, he made six saves and 34 accurate passes.
Jorgensen looks way more comfortable on the ball than Sanchez, who has already drawn criticism for his foot work this season.
Gary Neville thought Sanchez was “nervy” in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City last month.
In the future, then, it would not be a surprise if Jorgensen ousted Sanchez out of the Chelsea team. For now, though, it looks like Maresca will persist with the former Brighton & Hove Albion man.
