'Amazing': Gianfranco Zola admits he's been left shocked by £45m Chelsea player

Gianfranco Zola has explained why Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has really surprised him in the last year.

The current Chelsea squad is filled with lots of young players tipped as stars of the future, but Cole Palmer has emerged as a superstar figure since leaving Manchester City and joining the Blues last summer.

In 54 Chelsea appearances, Palmer now has 31 goals and 20 assists. The left-footed attacker continues to be the heartbeat of his side, whether that’s under the management of Mauricio Pochettino or now Enzo Maresca.

Palmer won the Premier League’s Player of the Month for September, which ties him with Blues great Eden Hazard for the individual award. Let’s hope he can continue his great form after the international break.

Gianfranco Zola shocked by Cole Palmer

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has delivered special praise on Palmer for his impact at Stamford Bridge in the last 13 months. Interestingly, he added that the £45m attacker (The Times) has surprised him with his meteoric rise and level of performances.

“I’m very impressed with Palmer because he’s doing amazing things and has been doing them for more than a season now,” Zola said, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“He’s probably one of the players that has surprised me the most. I could see straight away that he had qualities, but I didn’t see all of this coming.

“He has the ability to entertain. He always produces good passes and very good assists. What I love about him is when he receives the ball he is always looking up and many times he has the pass in mind before he receives the ball. This is a quality only the really big players have. I’m impressed.”

Big players shine in the big games

Palmer did well in matches against the Premier League’s best teams last season, so let’s see if he can continue that trend in the upcoming games.

Here is a look at Chelsea’s daunting run of league fixtures:

If Maresca’s side can come through the games above still in the top four, this could turn out to be a very enjoyable season for the supporters and everyone at the club.

When opposition teams are preparing to face the Blues, Palmer will surely be a big part of their pre-match discussions. He’s got a licence in the opening months of the season to thrive in the No 10 position in-between the lines, but it may be harder to pull the strings against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.
