‘Hasn’t done his job’: Jamie Carragher says Reece James has just proven Enzo Maresca’s leader comments true

A lot of the talk going into Chelsea’s Premier League game against Newcastle revolved around what Enzo Maresca had said about his captain.

The boss stated in his pre-match press conference that he had expected more from Reece James as far as leadership skills went.

The England international has struggled to maintain his fitness since Maresca joined the club, with him making his first appearance of the season last weekend against Liverpool.

It turned out to be back-to-back starts for the club when they took on Newcastle yesterday, although his position had completely changed.

Maresca believed that starting James at left-back worked well, however there were some fingers pointed at him when Chelsea conceded in the first half.

Alexander Isak ghosted in at the back post, escaping the attention of James in a key moment.

Jamie Carragher believes that this moment was just proof that what Maresca had said about him before the game had some substance behind it.

He said to Sky Sports: “Reece James hasn’t done his job. He loses Alexander Isak, either run back or scream at your defender to pick him up. He just let him go. I go back to what the manager said before the game – he wants more leadership.”

Should Chelsea replace James as club captain?

James was made captain of Chelsea at the start of last season, however has hardly been able to feature in that time due to injuries.

If the Blues would look to replace their skipper, one of the standout candidates from this season on the pitch has been Levi Colwill.

The England international has played in every Premier League game this season, and has shown in moments that he is leading by example at the back.

Chelsea fans have called for Colwill to be captain before, and Maresca may be looking at making a change in this role at some stage soon.
