‘I saw something’: Gary Neville shares where he thinks Chelsea will now finish after Liverpool defeat

Despite defeat against Liverpool at the weekend, the feeling was still relatively high regarding Chelsea’s prospects for the season.

The Blues were beaten 2-1 by the league leaders, although Enzo Maresca was content with what he saw from his players on the day.

He was able to welcome Reece James and Romeo Lavia back to his starting side. The club captain was featuring for the first time this season.

Chelsea supporters were impressed with the performances of both players, who managed just under an hour before being replaced as Maresca manages their fitness for the upcoming weeks.

Pundits were still not particularly harsh on the Blues, with Gary Neville fairly positive in his assessment of the game. He was critical though of the performance of Cole Palmer.

Gary Neville still predicts Chelsea to finish top four

Speaking to the Gary Neville Podcast after the game, he stuck to his guns after he predicted Chelsea would finish in the top four of the Premier League.

He said: “I watched Chelsea against City and they lost but I then put them in the top 4. I saw something again against Liverpool.

“I think Jackson can be a part of a successful group but if they get a world class striker and world class goalkeeper, they could really cause problems for the top three teams over the next seasons.”

Chelsea need to bounce back vs Newcastle

Chelsea’s only defeats this season have come against Liverpool and Manchester City, leaving them still competitive for a top four place at this stage.

They will need to bounce back next time out in the Premier League though. They are set to welcome Newcastle to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

A number of their key players are set to get a rest on Thursday when they are in Conference League action. Palmer, Lavia and Wesley Fofana will miss out after not been named in the squad for the group stages of that competition.
