‘Why?’: Richard Keys left bemused at what VAR did during Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool

Chelsea were likely not too pleased with what they saw from the referees during their recent defeat to Liverpool.

Two penalties were given against them in quick succession in the first half, although the second was rightly overturned after Robert Sanchez got the ball in his challenge.

VAR had to intervene to allow Nicolas Jackson’s goal too. His brilliant curved run saw him stay onside, despite the linesman originally flagging him as off.

There will be some Chelsea supporters wondering why they were not given a penalty in the first half when Jadon Sancho was taken out.

Despite not having the best performance, the England international saw his foot stood on by Trent Alexander-Arnold, although nothing was given.

Richard Keys bemused at no Chelsea penalty

Richard Keys was left adamant that it should have been a Chelsea penalty, and asked the question as to why there was no VAR review for the incident.

He said on the Richard Keys blog: “Chelsea should’ve had a pen before Brooks eventually gave Liverpool one. Sancho’s foot was clearly trodden on Kop end. Pen. Why was there no review?

“Salah tried to con one out of Brooks before Curtis Jones did. You could hear Brooks’ mind working ‘damn, I’ve just turned one down l, I’ll have to give this’. Yes, there was contact but it was no more or less than there had been on Sancho. It certainly wasn’t enough to send Jones tumbling.”

Pedro Neto impresses for Chelsea

Sancho was replaced at half-time by Pedro Neto, who impressed greatly in the latter stages of the game on both wings.

Frank Lampard stated he believed the Portuguese international should be considered for a start next time out, with the Blues welcoming Newcastle to Stamford Bridge after their Conference League exploits.

Despite annoyance with the officials, Enzo Maresca will likely be pleased with what he saw from his players. They have still only lost this season to the sides in the top two of the Premier League right now.
