'It depends': Enzo Maresca makes interesting tactical claim about Chelsea's Cole Palmer

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has just made some interesting comments regarding star player Cole Palmer.

It’s been a pretty impressive start for Enzo Maresca during his first season as Chelsea manager. So far, his side sit fourth in the Premier League table after seven games and are looking strong in cup competitions.

The way that Cole Palmer, 22, has started this campaign is another reason to be delighted with Maresca’s start. He’s already scored six goals and five assists in the league as his form from last year has carried straight into this one.

Incidentally, speaking via Football365 recently, Paul Gascoigne admitted he didn’t realise how good Chelsea’s Palmer actually was.

Enzo Maresca discusses Cole Palmer position

Maresca has just delivered a very intriguing tactical claim when it comes Chelsea’s Palmer. Apparently, the 22-year-old does have the versatility to play several different roles in the Blues system.

When discussing Palmer via Chelsea’s official website, Maresca said: “He can play in different positions for us because he is so good on the ball. He can play wide, in the middle, as a nine.

“We try to use him in one position at the moment in the middle of the pitch but it depends a little bit on the game plan we have and sometimes we move him wide a little bit like he did many times against Brighton. We try to give him the opportunity to enjoy his football because, with him, that is the main thing.”

We’ve seen that Palmer has mostly operated centrally in a No 10 position for Chelsea under Maresca, which has been a masterstroke because he’s often knitting attacks together in-between the lines. It sounds like there may be room for some flexibility, though.

His England career

Palmer found it a bit more difficult playing on the wing for England during this month’s international break, but someone with his talent should be a key player for the national side moving forward.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how Chelsea’s talisman fits into the plans of new England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Palmer and Tuchel never overlapped at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea supporters will be hoping their former boss fully values the playmaker’s ability, though.

Palmer was recently crowned England Player of the Year, which he did despite hardly starting. Let’s see how Tuchel deals with the Three Lions conundrum involving Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer fitting into the same XI.
