'It has carried on': Cole Palmer shares what keeps happening to him on the pitch at Chelsea

Last season, Cole Palmer was one of the best players in the Premier League, and that has also been the case this term.

The 2024 PFA Young Player of the Year already has 11 goal contributions in just seven top-flight appearances for Chelsea in the current campaign.

Cole Palmer will now have the chance to add to that when his side take on Liverpool later today. Liverpool could win the title with Palmer, Jamie Carragher has claimed, showing just how good the attacking midfielder has been.

Being one of the division’s best players, though, has not come without its costs.

Cole Palmer on being marked

For a while now, Palmer has felt that he keeps getting marked on the pitch. But given what he is capable of doing, it is not a surprise that teams are singling him out.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website ahead of the Liverpool game, the 22-year-old said: “Towards the end of last season, maybe like the last three or four months, I felt like I was getting marked more and it has carried on into this season.

“It seems like [I’m getting fouled more]! I’m going to get double shin pads — one at the front and one at the back! They only do little kicks so it doesn’t hurt too much. I see it as a compliment.”

Someone who knows all about being marked during games is Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, and Zola has admitted that Palmer’s impact has surprised him.

Cole Palmer unplayable at times

Honestly, players trying to man-mark Palmer is barely making a difference. In some games, the Englishman still looks untouchable.

He was incredible in Chelsea’s 4-2 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, for example, netting all four of his side’s goals that day.

According to WhoScored, Palmer is making 3.3 key passes per game in the Premier League this season, the highest average in Enzo Maresca‘s squad. Ultimately, the England international always makes something happen.

If Palmer is at his best against Liverpool later, then Chelsea could return to Stamford Bridge with at least a point.

With the likes of Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota, though, Arne Slot’s men obviously have a very dangerous attack, so the whole of Chelsea’s defence will also need to put in a top performance at Anfield. It is certainly going to be an interesting game.
