Craig Burley super impressed by one 'clever move' Enzo Maresca has made at Chelsea this season

Enzo Maresca has quickly silenced his doubters with a very impressive first few months in charge of Chelsea.

There were plenty of eyebrows raised when Enzo Maresca, 44, became the Chelsea manager in the summer. In fairness, it’s by a distance the biggest job of his coaching career so far.

However, the Blues have definitely taken big positive steps in recent months, including in the Premier League, where they sit third in the division table.

The Chelsea team has gelled into Maresca’s style of play extremely quickly, which is big credit to the management.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has noticed Maresca’s impact at Chelsea after the recent 1-1 league draw between the sides.

Craig Burley rates Enzo Maresca organisation at Chelsea

ESPN pundit Craig Burley is a massive fan of the way that Maresca arrived at Chelsea in the summer and made some firm decisions regarding his squad.

He’s claimed it was a “clever move” from the Italian boss to trim down his squad to a reasonable size to work with.

When discussing Maresca’s impact at Chelsea, Burley told ESPN: “He’s walking into a huge club that was a mess with all these signings; I thought there was no way he could get it organised. But in fairness to him he’s gone like that: [Raheem] Sterling out, [Ben] Chilwell and all these players I don’t want you. This is who I want to work with. That’s been quite a clever move.”

There were several high-profile individuals kicked out of Chelsea’s first-team group this summer in some capacity, including Raheem Sterling. Chris Sutton claims Maresca was right to get rid of Sterling and to loan him out to Arsenal.

Darren Bent agrees Maresca’s squad selection at Chelsea has been smart and kept everyone involved at Stamford Bridge. Can he keep up the feel-good factor going into a busy festive schedule, though?

Enzo Maresca record at Chelsea

So far, Maresca has a decent record as the Chelsea boss to get the fanbase supporting him. Here is a look at his side’s results this season:

Wins Draws Losses
10 4 4
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea record so far

It’s still a small sample size, but Maresca’s 56% win rate is marginally higher than what Mauricio Pochettino recorded as Chelsea boss last year (53%).

Hopefully, the Blues can kick on and build some momentum during a busy couple of months coming up. It starts for them after the international break with a trip to Leicester City in the league.
