Frank Lampard tells Enzo Fernandez what he needs to do to get back into the Chelsea team
Frank Lampard thinks Enzo Fernandez could struggle to get back into the Chelsea team following the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
There were some big names that were left out of Enzo Maresca‘s starting XI for the game at Old Trafford.
For example, both Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella were left on the bench, while Jadon Sancho was absent because of loan rules.
Sancho has also been sick, so he still could have missed the game even if he was allowed to play against United.

Frank Lampard’s message to Enzo Fernandez
Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia is the midfield pairing that Maresca has gone with lately.
They both started at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Caicedo scoring a phenomenal goal to ensure that Chelsea left with something.
Lampard now thinks Fernandez has to work hard to get back into Maresca’s starting XI.
Speaking about the 23-year-old on Sky Sports (03/11/2024 at 18:51), the Chelsea legend said: “For Enzo now, he will have to work hard, Fernandez, to get back into the team with them two… [Caicedo and Lavia] look like a good balance.”
Will Enzo Fernandez start against Arsenal?
Chelsea’s next Premier League game is against Arsenal, so it is another tough fixture.
Maresca has spoken about preferring Caicedo and Lavia in the middle at the moment because of their physicality.
Considering that, you would not expect Fernandez to come back into the side for the visit of Arsenal, unless an attacker drops out.
Declan Rice and Mikel Merino is also quite a strong and physical midfield. Maresca will surely be more confident if it is Caicedo and Lavia combatting that.
Fernandez cannot stay on the bench forever, though. He is a £100m World Cup winner who is earning £180,000 a week at Stamford Bridge, according to Spotrac. The Argentina international is an asset that should really be on the pitch.
But if Caicedo and Lavia are offering more physicality and stability in the middle of the park, then Maresca’s hands are tied. He has to put out the midfield that gives Chelsea the best chance of winning.
