'People underestimate': Troy Deeney claims everyone doesn't realise how good £58m Chelsea player actually is

The likes of Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo are rightly getting their flowers for some stellar performances in the Chelsea side, but there’s a few other teammates that are perhaps going a bit under the radar.

It’s a very talented Chelsea squad at Stamford Bridge this season when you look around the dressing room. If you want an example of the strength in depth, the Blues’ second string thrashed Noah 8-0 in midweek during the Conference League group stages.

Blues head coach Enzo Maresca deserves huge credit for the way he’s knitted everything together during his first few months in the dugout.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has applauded Maresca’s impact at Chelsea as he prepares for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against him.

Troy Deeney suggests Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia is underrated

According to Troy Deeney, Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia may be going a bit under the radar in terms of how much quality he actually possesses.

“I think people underestimate just how good Lavia is. He was excellent at Southampton. If he can get his injury problems behind him, he will be an excellent addition to that team,” Deeney told talkSPORT (12:14pm, 8 November).

Lavia, who’s still 20, is finally beginning to get a run of consecutive games for the Blues after some poor luck since he joined from Southampton in a £58m deal (Sky Sports) in August 2023.

Tim Sherwood has hailed Chelsea’s Lavia as an “incredible” player who’s now beginning to make his mark.

The defensive midfielder is thriving in the No.6 position. Next to him, Moises Caicedo is playing out of his skin in a No.8 role.

Is Romeo Lavia locked in Chelsea’s starting XI?

For now, it feels like Lavia and Caicedo have cemented their spots as the premium midfield partnership at Chelsea. As a result, Enzo Fernandez finds himself out of the best line-up.

Darren Bent is a big fan of Lavia and Caicedo in the Chelsea midfield, which is a combination that Maresca has started with in the last three consecutive league matches.

It would be a surprise to see the manager split up the new-look pairing in any of the upcoming league fixtures.

Chelsea’s midfield is likely to face one of his stiffest tests this weekend at home to Arsenal, but they do look well equipped to go toe-to-toe with them.
