'He must': Jamie Carragher tells Thomas Tuchel what he must do with Cole Palmer now he's England manager
Cole Palmer has enjoyed moments of brilliance for the England national team so far without really hitting his peak, so will the change of management be the catalyst for him to consistently shine on the international stage?
Thomas Tuchel, who previously had a fantastic spell at Chelsea, has become Gareth Southgate’s successor as the new England manager. Incidentally, his first matches in charge come against Albania and Latvia in March for World Cup qualifiers.
Blues attacker Cole Palmer, 22, is still yet to really show for his country what he replicates every week at club level. His best moment so far was scoring a spectacular goal in the final of Euro 2024, although England went on to lose 2-1 to Spain.
In fairness, the left-footed genius only has 11 senior England caps to his name. He’s yet to establish himself as a regular in the Three Lions starting line-up, but he’s certainly doing everything he possibly can in Chelsea colours to make the case that he should start.

Jamie Carragher has message for Thomas Tuchel about Cole Palmer
Jamie Carragher has urged England boss Tuchel to build his side around Chelsea’s Palmer and Real Madrid starJude Bellingham.
Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: “England are about to enter the era of Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer.
“Palmer has overtaken Phil Foden in the England reckoning. He must be in the starting XI, and the World Cup qualifiers are the perfect opportunity for Tuchel to build a team around these two amazing young players.”
Speaking earlier this month, Tuchel raved about the form of Chelsea’s Palmer. Let’s wait and see if he decides to use him when he picks his first England side in a few months time.
If the Blues playmaker is given a run of starts by Tuchel, we’re confident that he’ll reward him.
Has Cole Palmer overtaken Phil Foden?
Manchester City attacker Phil Foden was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season. On top of that, he’s earned 43 senior England caps and was key under Southgate’s reign.
However, Foden’s form has deserted him so far this campaign:
| Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Shots on target | Fouls drawn | Crosses | Successful take-ons |
| Cole Palmer | 18 | 12 | 6 | 24 | 41 | 84 | 25 |
| Phil Foden | 13 | 1 | 1 | 7 | 18 | 49 | 8 |
Micah Richards rates Palmer over Foden after seeing him go away to Chelsea and becoming their talisman. The most important thing from an England perspective is how does Tuchel view things.
