How Liam Delap has fared against the Premier League's top six ahead of Chelsea audition

A lot of eyes will be on Liam Delap when Ipswich Town host Chelsea at Portman Road on Monday.

Liam Delap has caught the attention of many with his performances this season and has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.

Delap is unlikely to join Chelsea in January, but a move in the summer could be possible if the Blues decide to sign a new striker.

With that in mind, how has the 21-year-old performed against Chelsea’s rivals, the Premier League’s traditional top six?

Liam Delap clinical against Tottenham Hotspur

Understandably, playing for a newly-promoted team, Delap has not been able to make too much of an impact against the Premier League’s elite.

In games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal, the forward failed to score or assist.

However, in Ipswich’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, it was a different story. Delap finished the game with one goal and one assist, proving to be very clinical that day.

During his 70 minutes on the pitch, the England U21 international only had one shot, which resulted in the goal that he scored.

If you are a Chelsea scout, it is very promising. Enzo Maresca, though, is unlikely to be surprised about Delap’s exploits.

Maresca recently described Delap as a “fantastic player” after working with him at City.

Liam Delap’s Chelsea audition

With Chelsea supposedly interested in Delap, then, the former City player has a great chance to make an impression when Ipswich take on the Blues on Monday.

Given how he has performed this season and his profile, Chelsea scouts probably like a lot about Delap.

Standing at 6’1″, Delap has the height of a Premier League centre-forward. He also has the physique of one.

Simply put, the Ipswich star looks like he has the potential to become a top Premier League No.9. And if he can put in a good performance against Chelsea, that could be the thing that convinces them to make an official offer for him in the new year.

While they have a buy-back clause, Man City do not seem interested in re-signing Delap, which is great news for Chelsea.
