Tosin Adarabioyo shares what Raheem Sterling first told him about Cole Palmer after watching him at Man City

Chelsea’s star man Cole Palmer is obviously a player whom Raheem Sterling knows very well.

Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling played in the same Chelsea team last season, while the two were also at Manchester City at the same time.

Tosin Adarabioyo, who was once on City’s books as well, has now shared details of a conversation that he had with Sterling about Palmer years ago.

Chelsea’s co-director of recruitment and talent Joe Shields was the man behind Palmer’s move to west London. It recently emerged that former Blues defender Ryan Bertrand played a key role in Chelsea hiring Shields.

Raheem Sterling knew Cole Palmer was special before Chelsea move

Palmer surprised many with his exploits last season. The attacking midfielder finished the campaign with 40 goal contributions in 45 games for Chelsea.

For Sterling, though, it would not have been too much of a shock. The 30-year-old was convinced that Palmer was the real deal after watching him at City and told Adarabioyo as much.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Adarabioyo said: “I remember having a conversation with Raz years ago whilst Raz was still at City and we were just speaking obviously about Phil [Foden] and all the other younger players and then he said, ‘Cole is the truth’ and I was like, ‘Wow, really?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, that kid in and around the box, he’s a different level’.”

While Adarabioyo is now getting to see what Palmer is capable of first-hand, Sterling is not any more following his loan move to Arsenal. Despite his lack of game time there, Sterling has no plans to return to Chelsea in January and look for another club.

What Raheem Sterling appreciates about Cole Palmer

Sterling has also praised Palmer for how he handles high-pressure moments, with the 22-year-old being Chelsea’s penalty taker.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website after Palmer scored a last-minute penalty against City in the 2023/24 season, Sterling said: “Cole took the penalty really well. Fair play to him, he’s despatched it away and he’s comfortable in those situations.

“It was a big moment but he kept his head for us when we needed him to come up with the goods.”

Since then, the England international has gone on to dispatch all of his following spot-kicks. He has a 100% record, with his last two coming in Chelsea’s 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

The former City man managed to score from open play in Chelsea’s last outing, a 2-1 defeat to Fulham. Palmer was named in one statistical team of the week because of that and his overall display that day.
