Why Enzo Maresca went straight over to a furious Enzo Fernandez at the end of Ipswich vs Chelsea - journalist

Ipswich Town were surprise victors on Monday after beating Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League.

Chelsea missed the chance to move to second and have now lost two consecutive matches after also losing to Fulham last week.

Supporters would have been extremely disappointed after the full-time whistle at Portman Road, while Enzo Fernandez also looked very unhappy at the end of the game.

After Chelsea’s defeat to Fulham, former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison questioned Enzo Maresca’s use of Fernandez during that game.

Enzo Maresca didn’t want Enzo Fernandez getting sent off

Marc Cucurella received a second yellow card after the full-time whistle in Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Brentford earlier this month.

It saw the defender miss the Blues’ following match versus Everton, which they went on to draw.

It seems Maresca was keen to avoid a repeat with Fernandez, who was booked during his side’s loss to Ipswich.

According to journalist Bobby Vincent, Maresca went straight over to a fuming Fernandez after the full-time whistle had gone to guide him away and prevent another Cucurella incident.

A lot of eyes continue to follow Fernandez because of his huge £107m price tag. Fernandez recently spoke about his transfer fee, claiming that it has not impacted him.

A lot of Chelsea players disappointed in the team’s defeat to Kieran McKenna’s side. Fernandez, though, actually put in quite a good performance.

In the middle of the park, Fernandez created a lot of chances for Chelsea, including one big one.

In total, the midfielder made five key passes and had 86 touches of the ball. He did not deserve to be on the losing side.

Unfortunately for Fernandez, though, he was and that defeat has now probably ended any hopes Chelsea had of winning the Premier League title.

Maresca’s men now need to try and bounce back when they take on Crystal Palace on Saturday, their first game of 2025.
