Enzo Maresca gives mixed injury update ahead of Chelsea's trip to Manchester City, two key players to return

Enzo Maresca saw his Chelsea squad down in numbers for the Premier League game against Wolves on Monday night.

As the Blues were picking up their first league win in six attempts, there was a first Premier League start for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, as well as a first Chelsea appearance of the season for Trevoh Chalobah.

The defender starred in his first minutes since returning from his loan at Crystal Palace, with Chalobah being named the Player of the Match.

Levi Colwill and Enzo Fernandez likely to return for Chelsea vs Manchester City

The Blues were without Levi Colwill at the back for that game, whilst Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia’s absence left an unfamiliar look to Chelsea’s midfield on Monday.

The trio are clearly important players in the manager’s system, and missing all of them for a trip to the Etihad to take on Manchester City would have been a big blow.

However, Maresca stated in his press conference that while Lavia is set to be out for a number of weeks, both Colwill and Fernandez could be available for selection.

He said in his pre-match press conference: “Probably Levi and Enzo will be available could be available, it depends on today’s session. Romeo will be out. We don’t know yet but could be a few more weeks.”

Colwill will likely be partnering Chalobah at the back if he is fit, with there being a potential three academy graduates in the starting side if either Reece James or Josh Acheampong start.

Cole Palmer in ‘better’ shape for City clash

Another player who was a doubt for the game against Wolves was Cole Palmer, who wasn’t training all week in the lead up to the game.

Maresca was full of praise for Palmer’s performance despite not scoring or assisting, and said in his press conference that he was in a far better condition now than he was earlier in the week.

“He’s better [fitness wise]. He did an unbelievable effort to play against Wolves. He’s getting better.”

Palmer will no doubt have a point to prove against the side who Chelsea signed him from, with him keen to further show them just how big a mistake they made letting him go.

The return of Fernandez will also take some of the burden off the England international as far as being a creator goes.
