Enzo Maresca responds when asked if Chelsea need to sign a new winger amid Alejandro Garnacho speculation

During Friday morning’s press conference, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was asked about whether the club needs to sign another wide player amid transfer rumours regarding Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho.

Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea manager, has been previewing this Saturday’s upcoming Premier League fixture away to Manchester City. It’s no real surprise that plenty of questions were transfer-related because the January window is still open.

The Blues are linked with a potential move for Man Utd star Alejandro Garnacho, 20, this month.

Chelsea are ‘likely’ to make an opening bid for Garnacho as they like the Premier League winger, but he’s expected to cost in excess of £50m to take away from Old Trafford.

Enzo Maresca says whether or not Chelsea need to sign a new winger

Maresca insisted this morning that his Blues squad doesn’t need the addition of another wide player.

Maresca was directly asked whether Chelsea could do with signing another winger amid the Garnacho speculation. He responded via Chelsea’s official YouTube channel: “I’m happy with what we have in this moment. On the right side it is Pedro [Neto] and Noni [Madueke], on the left we have Jadon [Sancho]. Misha (Mykhailo Mudryk) was with us but now he’s not with us. Tyrique [George] I think is a young profile that can help us. In this moment, we are okay.”

At the start of January, Maresca wanted Chelsea reinforcements at centre-back, midfield and striker. So far, he’s had one of them with the recall of central defender Trevoh Chalobah from a loan at Crystal Palace.

The mid-season window remains open until the 3 February, so it’ll be interesting to see if there’s any more incomings at Stamford Bridge.

Jason Cundy wouldn’t mind Chelsea signing Garnacho, but Maresca’s suggestion today is he’s not the kind of player he wants.

Should Chelsea sign another winger?

Even though Chelsea’s wide players need to contribute more goals, it’s fair to say that it’s not an area of the pitch that should be a priority in the transfer window. Instead, the Blues are crying out for another centre-forward, or some extra cover in midfield or defence.

Player Appearances Goals
Noni Madueke 24 7
Pedro Neto 25 3
Jadon Sancho 19 2
Mykhailo Mudryk 15 3
Tyrique George 10 0

Interestingly, Chelsea target Garnacho has scored eight goals in 33 matches across all competitions so far this season for Man Utd. It’ll be interesting to see where he’s playing by the time the transfer window shuts.
