How Trevoh Chalobah compares to Chelsea's other centre-backs as Blues reportedly consider recall

This transfer window is already starting to look like it could be an interesting one for Chelsea.

The Blues are currently without Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile because of injury. Fofana may not be back until the 2025/26 season, showing how serious his problem is.

As a result, it is being reported that Chelsea could recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace.

With that in mind, The Chelsea Chronicle takes a look at how the 25-year-old compares to Enzo Maresca‘s current crop of central defenders.

Trevoh Chalobah has higher numbers than Chelsea’s current defenders

It is always hard to compare defenders statistically, especially when they are playing for teams at the opposite ends of the table.

In a team such as Palace that have to do way more defending in games than Chelsea, Chalobah perhaps has more opportunities to show off his defensive abilities. Nevertheless, since he could return to west London this month, it is still worth looking at his numbers compared to the likes of Levi Colwill and Fofana’s.

Starting off with the basics, when it comes to tackles, interceptions and clearances made per game in the Premier League, Chalobah comes out on top against all of Chelsea’s main centre-half options.

Player Games Starts Minutes Tackles *(APG) Interceptions (APG) Clearances (APG) Blocks (APG)
Trevoh Chalobah 12 12 1063 1.7 1.6 4.8 0.8
Levi Colwill 19 19 1710 0.9 1.1 3.3 0.9
Wesley Fofana 12 12 1017 1.1 1 3.9 0.8
Tosin Adarabioyo 9 7 622 1.1 0.3 2.9 0.4
Benoit Badiashile 4 2 248 1.5 1.5 1.5 0.5
Axel Disasi 5 4 352 1.4 0.2 2 0.2

At Palace, Chalobah has also proven to be a bit of a goalscoring defender this season, netting three times in the Premier League. Combined, Colwill, Fofana, Adarabioyo, Badiashile and Disasi have managed just one.

With a pass success rate of just 79.8%, Chalobah pales in comparison to Maresca’s group of centre-backs there, though that may be partly down to style of play. Chelsea are obviously a more possession-based team compared to Palace.

Player Goals Assists Pass success rate % Aerial duels won (APG)
Trevoh Chalobah 3 0 79.8 1.8
Levi Colwill 0 1 90.3 2
Wesley Fofana 0 0 90.2 1.9
Tosin Adarabioyo 0 0 92.6 1.7
Benoit Badiashile 0 0 90.1 1.5
Axel Disasi 1 0 92.1 1

Ultimately, what the above shows is that Chalobah has defended well at Palace this season and is having a good campaign under Oliver Glasner. He should be recalled if Maresca is desperate for another centre-back.

Chelsea have been linked with Marc Guehi, Chalobah’s current teammate at Palace, but that is likely to be a very expensive deal, given the time of the year and the 24-year-old’s value to the Eagles.

Trevoh Chalobah may not want to return to Chelsea

Colwill is available, while Maresca still has Adarabioyo and Disasi. It means that the Chelsea manager is not completely out of options and that he may not be able to guarantee Chalobah a starting position.

At Palace, though, the former England U21 international has got that, while it is unlikely that he has forgotten how Maresca and Chelsea treated him last summer.

Chalobah was frozen out of the first-team squad as Chelsea tried to force him out of the club.

Therefore, it would not be a shock if Chalobah was not too keen on the idea of returning to the Bridge. The ball, however, looks to be in Chelsea’s court.
