'I am surprised': Jody Morris admits he's often left 'baffled' by Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca for one reason

Enzo Maresca is currently going through his biggest challenge yet since becoming the Chelsea head coach last summer.

There were a few eyebrows raised when Enzo Maresca, 44, took charge as the Chelsea manager before the start of the season. He quickly got the supporters onboard with plenty of positive results in the opening few months of his reign, though.

Unfortunately, the Blues are currently on a run of five consecutive matches in the Premier League without a win, which has resulted in them dropping out of the top four.

Maresca is worried about Chelsea midfielders Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo because he fears they’re being overworked in the centre of the park. Thankfully, Romeo Lavia’s timely return in the last couple of games should help share the load.

The January transfer window may be a big distraction off the pitch right now, but the team quickly needs to get back on track as they’re threatening to undo all their positive work in the first half of the season.

Jody Morris ‘baffled’ by what Enzo Maresca does at Chelsea

Jody Morris, who’s a former Chelsea assistant manager, is generally positive and impressed by Maresca’s impact during his debut season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

However, he’s not convinced by the way that the Italian boss uses his substitutions. For example, he flagged that Blues attackers Joao Felix and Pedro Neto didn’t enter the action until the 81st minute during the midweek 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

When discussing Chelsea boss Maresca, Morris told talkSPORT: “I wouldn’t want to be critical of Maresca from a coaching aspect so far because I do think the way he tries to play the game and the way we have been the better team in quite a lot of games has been good.

“I am surprised with how long he waits sometimes to make decisions and substitutions, even the other day waiting until 80 minutes for [Pedro] Neto… That’s one of the things I’ve maybe been a little bit baffled by: why he waits so long to make some substitutions.”

Without a doubt, Maresca always has so many great options to choose from on his bench because of the depth in the Blues squad this season. We agree that he sometimes waits too long to switch things up, especially during this recent poor run when they’re throwing league points away.

Chelsea attacker Joao Felix needs more minutes, and he’s one of several regulars on the bench that could perhaps be utilised more with some bolder in-game management.

Enzo Maresca must use the depth

With Chelsea going through such a poor run right now, it might be wise for Maresca to make the most of his bench. The strength in depth is even more important during such a busy period, too.

Here is a look at the Blues bench in midweek to highlight just how much quality is in reserve:

Chelsea bench vs Bournemouth
Filip Jorgensen
Reece James
Malo Gusto
Tosin Adarabioyo
Renato Veiga
Pedro Neto
Joao Felix
Christopher Nkunku
Marc Guiu

Even if one or two individuals do leave the club before the close of the January window, Chelsea will still be left with a bench that most teams in the Premier League would dream of.
