'I think': Paul Merson says how Chelsea's Cole Palmer is more consistent than Liverpool's Mohamed Salah

It’s a pretty popular opinion that Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah are the two outstanding individuals in the Premier League right now.

Cole Palmer, 22, is doing special things on a weekly basis in Chelsea colours. It’s great to see the English playmaker backing up his debut season with the Blues with another outstanding individual campaign.

Jamie Carragher massively rates Chelsea’s Palmer and wants to see England manager Thomas Tuchel build the national side around him.

As for Mohamed Salah, he’s been performing at a world-class level for so long at Liverpool. Remarkably, the 32-year-old right-winger is currently on track for his best ever campaign as he spearheads his side’s charge towards the Premier League title.

Paul Merson claims Cole Palmer is more consistent than Mohamed Salah

Paul Merson has now come out with a pretty outlandish claim when discussing Palmer and Salah.

First of all, he’s predicted the Chelsea star to pip his Liverpool counterpart to the Premier League’s Player of the Season. On top of that, he’s said that Palmer is a more consistent performer than Salah during games of football.

“I think he’s (Palmer) made Chelsea a much better team. He’s been involved a lot more. I think Salah is playing in an unbelievable team with unbelievable players. This lad I just think he’s a special, special player,” Merson told Sky Sports News.

“Believe it or not, I think he’s more consistent than Salah in a game of 90 minutes. I think he’s involved more.

“Don’t get me wrong. I love Salah. He’s different class, one of the best in the world. But sometimes you’ll watch Salah, and he’ll do something, and you’ll go, ‘Really?’. Or he’ll put one over the bar, and you’ll go, ‘Really?’… The thing with Salah, he can not touch the ball and score two goals in two minutes.

“I just think he’s carried Chelsea. I think he’s been a catalyst. I don’t think Salah has been a catalyst. I think he’s in a very, very good team. This lad has taken Chelsea to the brink of hopefully getting into the Champions League.”

Like any elite footballer, Palmer can go through spells in any match where he goes quiet. He can be relied upon to produce several pieces of magic per game, though.

In fairness, it’s exactly the same for Salah in a Liverpool shirt. While we’ll fight the corner for Palmer being the best player to watch in the Premier League right now, it’s hard to look past the numbers that the Egyptian forward is posting at Anfield.

Steve Nicol admits he’d swap Salah for Palmer at Liverpool, but that’s very much down to the fact that the Chelsea attacker is 10 years younger.

Cole Palmer vs Mohamed Salah this season

Palmer is enjoying a phenomenal individual campaign right now for Chelsea, playing such a key role in Enzo Maresca’s attacking XI. However, even he’s being eclipsed by the staggering output by Salah.

Player Appearances Goals Assists Combined goal contributions
Cole Palmer 19 12 6 18
Mohamed Salah 18 17 13 30
Cole Palmer vs Mohamed Salah in the 2024/25 Premier League season

As it stands, Palmer definitely looks like the most likely heir to Salah’s throne as the Premier League’s best attacker. The Liverpool forward isn’t giving up that crown right now, though.

It feels wrong to suggest Palmer is more consistent than Salah in this moment when the Reds superstar is scoring and assisting at such a frequent rate this season.

There’s still half a season to go in the 2024/25 campaign, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of numbers both post by the end of it.
