Jason Cundy noticed 'deliberate' tactic Enzo Maresca gave Chelsea star Cole Palmer vs Wolves
Chelsea returned to winning ways at the start of the week by securing a 3-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and it may surprise most people that Cole Palmer didn’t score or assist in the game.
The Blues are back into the top four of the Premier League after a first win in their last six top-flight games. Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke were all on the scoresheet for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Cole Palmer, 22, has been the talisman in the Chelsea squad since he joined one and a half seasons ago. The attacking midfielder is the biggest source of goals and creativity under Enzo Maresca. In 22 league appearances this season, he’s scored 14 goals and created six assists.
Interestingly, Maresca thought Palmer had one of his best Chelsea game versus Wolves despite the fact that he failed to score.

Jason Cundy noticed the tactic Enzo Maresca gave Cole Palmer in Chelsea win vs Wolves
Jason Cundy thought Chelsea’s Palmer was magnificent in steering his side to an important league victory over Wolves a couple of days ago.
Interestingly, he spotted that the attacking midfielder was dropping deeper to get on the football a lot more, explaining that it must’ve been a deliberate tactic from head coach Maresca.
Cundy said via Chelsea’s official app (9:45pm, 20 January): “Palmer is coming off. He has been outstanding in this second half. When I say that, I mean he was the catalyst to what got us higher up the pitch. He was the catalyst that got the ball moving through the midfield third, which didn’t happen once we took the lead in the first half.
“A deliberate ploy by Maresca to make him drop deeper and be influential. He orchestrates things; that’s what he did.”
Palmer was instrumental to Chelsea’s win over Wolves as he dropped from the No.10 position to obtain possession and get his team ticking. We’ve noticed an immediate buzz from the supporters whenever the England playmaker gets the ball because it usually results in something positive.

Cole Palmer form since Christmas
Even though Chelsea are struggling for form since Christmas, Palmer continues to deliver consistently impressive performances when he features.
Here is a look at the 22-year-old’s influence in the recent Blues matches:

| 20 January | Premier League | Chelsea 3-1 Wolves | 84 | 0 | 0 | 7.1 |

Joe Cole recently compared Chelsea’s Palmer to Lionel Messi because he plays the game at his own speed. In that single aspect, we definitely understand what he means.
Palmer is held to the extremely high standards that he’s set himself since arriving in West London, and he’s not letting his levels dip.
