'Not dangerous enough': Mario Melchiot rips into 'scared' Chelsea star and urges club to make January signing

Mario Melchiot has singled out one Chelsea individual for big criticism after the weekend’s latest setback.

Chelsea fell to a 3-1 away defeat at Manchester City on Saturday in the Premier League, which means they’ve only got one win in their last seven top-flight games. As a result, they’ve dropped down to sixth in the division table.

In fairness, you can pick several holes across the Blues squad right now because plenty of players are out of form.

Chelsea could have a ‘busy’ finish to the January transfer window, which may provide the club with a much-needed boost during a difficult part of the season.

Mario Melchiot urges Chelsea to sign striker after more Nicolas Jackson struggles

ESPN pundit Mario Melchiot wasn’t impressed by what he saw from Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson in the defeat to Man City.

The 23-year-old striker extended his unwanted run to seven consecutive games without scoring. It’s perhaps a sign that he’s lost his confidence in front of goal that he refused a left-footed shot at the Etihad Stadium because of a tight angle after a pass from Cole Palmer.

Former Blues defender Melchiot insists that Chelsea must go out and sign another centre-forward.

“When I watch Jackson in the [Man City vs Chelsea] game, he was not dangerous enough,” Melchiot told ESPN.

“He had a moment when he could score a goal and he was scared to kick it with his left. He controlled it first and the chance was gone when Palmer put him in. When that moment happened, I was like no they need a striker, an extra striker to compete with him.”

Chelsea supporters weren’t impressed with Jackson’s performance versus Man City, particularly because he didn’t capitalise on nervous debutant Abdukodir Khusanov.

The Blues frontman has a decent tally of nine Premier League goals so far this season, but his form has disappeared at a crucial time. He continues to retain his position as the starting centre-forward, though.

Blues head coach Enzo Maresca keeps sticking with Jackson to lead the line rather than starting with the likes of Marc Guiu, Christopher Nkunku or Joao Felix.

Will Chelsea sign a new forward in January?

We agree that Chelsea could do with recruiting another No.9. Ideally, the Blues would sign someone in the final days of the January transfer window to compete and rotate with Jackson.

Recent rumours suggest that Maresca’s side are working on attacking reinforcements.

Chelsea will hold more talks about Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel as the 19-year-old forward wants to leave the Allianz Arena in the January window.

Elsewhere, Chelsea could miss out on Brighton’s 20-year-old striker Evan Ferguson because West Ham lead the race for his loan signature this month.
