Report: What Enzo Maresca said to Trevoh Chalobah before Chelsea recall as details of what really happened last summer emerge
No one would have blamed Trevoh Chalobah if the defender did not want to leave Crystal Palace for Chelsea this month.
Trevoh Chalobah joined Crystal Palace on loan last summer after being exiled from Chelsea’s first-team squad.
While the centre-back would have been disappointed with being forced out of his boyhood club, his loan spell at Palace was proving fruitful. There, he made 12 starts in the Premier League while scoring three goals — very impressive for a defender.
Even so, it does not look like Chalobah is going to kick up a fuss after being dragged back to Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca gives Trevoh Chalobah assurances
Chalobah will just want to play football, and it appears that Enzo Maresca will allow him to.
According to The Athletic, while Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Axel Disasi and Josh Acheampong are all still available, the Chelsea boss has already given Chalobah assurances that he will have a meaningful first-team role, doing so before his return to west London.
It will be interesting to see whether Maresca can now keep his promise, especially with the transfer window not being shut yet.
There has been talk that Chelsea could yet bring in another centre-half before February’s deadline.

Do Trevoh Chalobah and Enzo Maresca have a bad relationship?
Despite being excluded from Maresca’s main group last summer, there does not seem to be any bad blood between the Italian and Chalobah.
In fact, The Athletic’s article says it was the club’s decision to freeze out Chalobah and that the 25-year-old and Maresca actually had “positive interactions” when the latter first arrived at Cobham.
Whether that continues to happen now that Chalobah has returned to Chelsea remains to be seen. If Maresca does not give him minutes, you suspect he will not be happy about being recalled from Palace, where he was enjoying a very productive loan spell.
In the end, with Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile unavailable, you can obviously understand Maresca and the club’s thinking here.
