Enzo Maresca gives mixed injury update on two Chelsea players straight after Brighton defeat

Chelsea slipped to a heavy defeat away to Brighton on Friday night, and there were some injury scares to go along with a really poor team performance.

The Blues suffered a 3-0 loss at the Amex Stadium in the Premier League showdown. Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh (two) scored for Brighton as they cruised to three points.

For Chelsea, it was the second defeat against Brighton in the space of just six days. There’s no doubt that the league match was so much worse than the recent 2-1 loss in the FA Cup, too.

Chelsea supporters weren’t impressed by Jadon Sancho’s performance versus Brighton, but the truth is very few players came out of the game with any credit in the bank.

Enzo Maresca provides injury update on two Chelsea players after Brighton loss

Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea manager, has provided an update on two individuals who started but didn’t finish the Brighton defeat.

Blues winger Noni Madueke was forced off with a hamstring issue after only 20 minutes. Meanwhile, teammate Malo Gusto was replaced at right-back during the second half after receiving some treatment on the pitch.

Apparently, Gusto is fine after his issue, but Madueke could now face a spell on the sidelines.

“Malo is okay. Noni, unfortunately it is a hamstring problem, so he will be out for a while,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference via Football.London.

Chelsea injuries not helping during difficult run

Without a doubt, Chelsea should be doing miles better in 2025. They’ve picked up just eight points out of a possible 24 in the league since Boxing Day.

The current injury list is one of the factors contributing to their considerable dip, though.

Maresca expects a Chelsea injury boost soon by welcoming back Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile in the next few weeks. However, strikers Marc Guiu and Nicolas Jackson are both sidelined with respective injury problems.

It’s frustrating to see Madueke will be joining those players watching from the stands.

Even though Madueke’s form is a little erratic, the right-winger has still scored eight goals across all competitions this season. Let’s see if his absence in the games ahead opens the door for youngster Tyrique George to get more minutes.

Jason Cundy thought Chelsea’s George was lively as a substitute against Brighton.
