How Chelsea wonderkid Aaron Anselmino got on as he makes first appearance for U21s since his £15m move

A lot of talk on deadline day surrounded whether one of Chelsea’s most impressive young talents was going to be playing his football elsewhere for the rest of the season.

Aaron Anselmino was brought to Stamford Bridge early following his £15m move from Boca Juniors, after originally being expected to join at the end of the season.

Roberto de Zerbi’s Marseille were very keen on bringing the defender in late in the transfer window, however Chelsea seemed to run out of abroad loan deals following Joao Felix’s exit.

Aaron Anselmino keeps clean sheet on Chelsea U21s debut

Chelsea U21s trip to Liverpool at the weekend saw them pick up a resounding 3-0 win, as a strong team with some familiar names playing starring roles.

Anselmino played more than an hour in his first appearance for the U21s, helping keep a clean sheet on their travels.

As per Chelsea Youth, the Argentine impressed with his physicality, although it didn’t seem to be the toughest attack he will ever face.

They said: “Anselmino; impressive physical profile at first look, quick across the ground but had pretty much nothing to do of note (or of PL consequence) against a toothless Liverpool attack. Will have had harder training sessions.”

He featured in a strong backline that also included Josh Acheampong, a player who this season has been promoted to the first team alongside Tyrique George.

Chelsea’s plan for Aaron Anselmino

After not being loaned out in January, Anselmino has been training with the first team as he gets to grips with things in West London.

The centre-back has even been named on the bench for the last two games against Brighton, however largely down to injuries running rampant through the squad.

Enzo Maresca has already stated that he believes it is too early for the youngster to be thrown into first team games at this stage.

He said: “No, it is still too early. The plan for him is to put him in condition to get some minutes in the future, not now,. He had some injuries when he was there (Boca Juniors). Now it’s important to arrive here and adapt to English weather, English football and then from there we start to use him.”

It has been reported though that Maresca is a big fan of Anselmino, and the future is certainly bright for him now he has got his big move.
