I was at Stamford Bridge and saw Enzo Maresca create big issue for Nicolas Jackson in Chelsea’s win - opinion

Chelsea regained their place in the top four of the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Pedro Neto and Cole Palmer in the second half helped spare the blushes of Levi Colwill, whose mistake led to Jarrod Bowen opening the scoring.

The Blues bounced back from their damning defeat last week against Manchester City, capitalising on a plethora of results going their way this weekend.

Marc Guiu now genuine competition for Nicolas Jackson at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca got a lot of praise from Chelsea supporters for the substitutes he made and how they changed the game.

Neto found the net off the bench, and there was also a positive impact from Christopher Nkunku, and notably Marc Guiu.

The Spaniard replaced Nicolas Jackson just after half-time with what looked like an injury concern, although the youngster certainly made an impact with what was only his third Premier League appearance of the season.

Jackson is undergoing a serious dry spell in front of goal right now, however of late there has not been a recognised option to replace him in the starting side.

The Blues elected to not sign a new striker in the January transfer window, however they also opted to not send either Nkunku or Guiu out on loan either.

This is despite prominent interest in the two of them, with Championship clubs looking at Guiu as late as deadline day.

Marc Guiu starring in the Conference League

The Spaniard is the top scorer in the Conference League so far this season, and has been waiting patiently for a proper opportunity to make an impact on Maresca.

The manager now has a genuine striker option to replace Jackson, with Nkunku seen predominantly as a player who can operate behind the number nine.

While Guiu did not find the net against West Ham, he showed brilliant link-up play with the attackers surrounding him, and left a serious decision to be made over who starts up front next time out.

While it is likely that Jackson keeps his place for now, he will now certainly be looking over his shoulder at the teenager as a threat to his place in the starting side.
