Despite Moises Caicedo’s brilliance, £62m Chelsea player is Enzo Maresca’s real star of the season - opinion

It is going to be a lot closer this season than last over who will be handed the player of the year award at Chelsea.

Last season, it was Cole Palmer who was cleaning up the awards, although voted for Malo Gusto to win himself.

Many supporters would have Moises Caicedo up there as their best player of the season, with the club-record signing coming into his own this season.

He has even shown a versatility very few central midfield players can, with Caicedo praised for playing right-back during the win against Everton at Stamford Bridge.

The Ecuador international is certainly one of the favourites to win the awards at Chelsea this season, however one player may have something to say about that, especially with his recent displays.

Marc Cucurella is Enzo Maresca’s unsung hero at Chelsea

Marc Cucurella is arguably the first name on Enzo Maresca’s team sheet right now due to the lack of depth in the left-back position.

The Blues allowed Renato Veiga to leave the club on loan in January, after he made it clear he wanted more minutes at the heart of defence.

It has been in both attack and defence where the Spaniard has contributed to his side’s efforts. Cucurella is Chelsea’s top scorer in 2025.

It looks as if at both ends of the pitch the defender has found the perfect coach to take instructions from in Maresca, something that is crucial after failed previous advice from Graham Potter.

Marc Cucurella 24/25 stats

Cucurella has missed just two Premier League games all season, and the numbers are very strong for the Chelsea man.

Marc Cucurella PL stats 24/25 Total
Goals 4
Tackles won 38
Recoveries 110
Duels won 123
Pass Accuracy 89.2%

Not everyone was convinced by the Spain international when Chelsea forked out £62m to sign him from Brighton, and it certainly took him a while to perform at his best level.

However, his presence is now crucial, and going to be key in them pushing to qualify for next season’s Champions League, as well as winning the Conference League competition next month.
