Fabrizio Romano delivers update on Chelsea's efforts to sign Liam Delap, 'something is starting'

Chelsea have put a lot of effort into being in a position to pull off one particular Premier League swoop at the end of the season.

The Blues are one of the sides who have been mentioned as potential suitors for Liam Delap, who looks certain to be on the move at the end of this season.

Chelsea chiefs will have been hoping to get a good look at the player during Ipswich Town’s recent visit to Stamford Bridge, where they threatened to cause a real upset even without the Englishman in the starting side.

Despite only making a cameo performance, Chelsea fans were convinced by Delap in his time one the pitch, with him pulling off one piece of skill that saw him absolutely destroy Trevoh Chalobah.

Delap has a relegation release clause, and despite their point in West London, Ipswich still look likely to be exiting the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

Chelsea make first contacts about signing Liam Delap

Chelsea were seen in January as the favourites to sign Delap, however have now been joined with serious interest by Manchester United, who are equally desperate to address the striker position in their squad.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that both sides have opened talks with people close to the player in an attempt to get themselves ahead in the race to sign him this summer.

He said: “Liam Delap is available for £30m if Ipswich get relegated, but I can tell you that even before we know if that clause will be active or not, now Manchester United and Chelsea have made contact with people close to the player.

“Both are exploring this opportunity, asking how the clause works, asking about the potential salary, so they are exploring the move. Now, in terms of contacts, something is starting. So let’s follow the situation.”

Chelsea’s Liam Delap alternatives

The Blues have more than one striker on their shortlist for this summer, with it becoming continually clear that they need to add a goalscorer to their ranks at the end of the season.

Victor Osimhen has been linked for a number of years now, and his future is in the air due to his loan at Galatasaray coming to an end this summer.

John Obi Mikel has claimed Osimhen is desperate to join Chelsea, however it remains to be seen if the Blues go back to that avenue.

Delap’s move to Chelsea could also be stopped by signing Benjamin Sesko, with him another player on the radar of a number of top European clubs.
