Thierry Henry talks about disconnect between Enzo Maresca and Chelsea fans, makes Unai Emery comparison

Thierry Henry has weighed in with his thoughts about Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca after his controversial comments riled up the club’s fanbase.

Enzo Maresca, the Blues manager, is certainly under the spotlight right now.

Chelsea are down to sixth in the Premier League table and risk missing out on Champions League qualification because of their poor form. The latest slip-up was Sunday’s extremely frustrating 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge.

After dropping two points against Ipswich last weekend, Maresca criticised the environment at Stamford Bridge created by the Chelsea fans. Without a doubt, many supporters are growing super frustrated with the team’s style of play, where they’re constantly building out from the back.

Chelsea’s football can be quite methodical at times with familiar patterns of play, so fans are desperate for a bit more directness and risk-taking.

Thierry Henry compares Enzo Maresca situation to what happened with Unai Emery at Arsenal

Premier League legend Thierry Henry can understand why Chelsea fans voiced their anger towards Maresca during the Ipswich match.

Interestingly, Maresca’s situation with the Blues reminds him of what happened to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery when he managed Arsenal between 2018 and 2019. Even though Emery has been a successful manager nearly everywhere he’s gone in his career, he struggled to build the right rapport at Arsenal.

When asked about the disconnect between Chelsea and Maresca, Henry told Sky Sports: “It’s on you to create a connection, but it was also because they were playing against Ipswich…

“I just think at one point it’s very difficult for the manager. When you want to do something, try to have the style. I remember Unai Emery when he arrived at Arsenal, he was trying to play out from the back, and the Arsenal fans were not having it even though he won stuff. We’re talking about Maresca, that is yet to win a lot as a coach.”

Maresca’s Chelsea side do dominate the football better than most teams, but a criticism is that they often don’t do enough with it.

Earlier in April, Brentford fans labelled Chelsea as “boring” after their goalless draw in the league.

While the Blues do possess real attacking flair with the likes of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, you could argue they’re being shackled somewhat in the current system.

Predicting Enzo Maresca’s future

It’s certainly never a good sign when fans are loudly voicing their anger and distrust towards their manager.

In terms of Maresca’s position at Chelsea, we think he’ll still get time to lead them into a second term despite some turbulence during his first season in charge.

It’s been reported that Maresca’s role at Chelsea is safe for now despite the Ipswich result and growing noise from the fanbase. In fairness, we can understand why the pressure is building because the club’s form has massively dipped off in 2025.

Even if the Blues do win the Conference League and qualify for next season’s Champions League, we’re not convinced Maresca will be able to win everbody over.
