Mike Penders shares what he plans to do at the end of the season with Chelsea already making decision on long-term future

Genk goalkeeper Mike Penders will officially join Chelsea this summer to give Enzo Maresca another option between the sticks.

Chelsea agreed a deal with Genk last year for Penders to move to Stamford Bridge in 2025.

While he is still just 19 years of age, Chelsea are confident Penders can adapt to the Premier League very quickly.

However, there is no guarantee that the Belgian will be part of Maresca‘s squad next season, with the Blues having several other goalkeepers on their books.

Mike Penders set for talks

Last month, The Chelsea Chronicle was told that Penders was backing himself to become the No.1 at Chelsea.

Since then, the shot-stopper has shared that he is set for talks with the club and that “all options” are still on the table.

Speaking to Het Belang van Limburg in a recent interview, Penders said: “All options are still open. First, the full focus will be on the play-offs, then we will sit around the table.”

From Chelsea’s perspective, one thing that will not be happening this summer is a sale, which is not a surprise, given that he has just joined the club.

According to journalist Matt Law, Penders will not be sold in the upcoming transfer window. At least two goalkeepers, though, are probably going to have to leave Stamford Bridge.

Maresca will find it impossible to keep Penders, Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Djordje Petrovic all happy.

Mike Penders confident he can adapt quickly

Chelsea are not the only ones who do not think it will take long for Penders to settle in. The player himself is confident that he can adapt quickly to life in England.

In the same interview with Het Belang van Limburg, the Genk star said: “I have only been to London once, that was to sign my contract. The city is of course very busy, but the training centre is in a quiet neighbourhood. Oh well, I adapt quickly to everything.”

Penders may have to wait a year or two, however, before he gets a proper chance in the Chelsea first team. While it is not impossible that he stays at the club this summer, the Blues are probably considering whether to loan him out or not given his age and all of their other options.
