Chelsea signing Joao Pedro names his best position and even compares himself to Barcelona star
New Chelsea signing Joao Pedro could prove to be a really useful option for Enzo Maresca with his versatility.
Joao Pedro, 23, is now officially a Chelsea player after joining from Brighton earlier this week. He’s even gone straight into the Blues squad for Saturday’s Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Palmeiras.
The Brazilian attacker has proven in his career he can operate as a No.9, No.10 or a winger.
Interestingly, Chelsea’s initial plan with Pedro is to use him as a central striker or as an option off the left. It means that he could be competing with Blues centre-forwards Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap for a starting role.

Joao Pedro claims he’s best as a striker, makes Robert Lewandowski comparison
During a Q&A on Chelsea’s Instagram account, Pedro revealed a lot of fascinating information about himself. The main takeaways are that he prefers to play up front, and he compared his style of play to Barcelona frontman Robert Lewandowski.
Q: Your best position?
A: “Striker.”
Q: Your best football attribute?
A: “Scoring.”
Q: The closest comparison to you as a player?
A: “Let’s say [Robert] Lewandowski.”
Chelsea insiders are confident Pedro will settle quickly and make an immediate impact at the club. It will be interesting to see if he gets a run of games in his preferred position, though.
In 70 Brighton appearances across two seasons, Pedro scored 30 goals. He’s got a long way to go if he wants to emulate the type of goalscoring that legendary striker Lewandowski has achieved for well over a decade.
| Player | Age | Club appearances | Club goals | International caps | International goals |
| Joao Pedro | 23 | 215 | 64 | 3 | 0 |
| Robert Lewandowski | 36 | 823 | 610 | 158 | 85 |
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler describes Pedro’s move to Chelsea as “exciting” for the player because it could edge him closer to playing for Brazil at next year’s World Cup.

Fierce battle for the position as Chelsea striker
It looks like there could be a few quality individuals all vying for the role as Chelsea’s starting striker next season.
As mentioned above, Pedro’s got his eyes on leading the line for the Blues. Liam Delap has also arrived from Ipswich Town this summer with aspirations of taking charge as the club’s main centre-forward.
Nicolas Jackson has been the automatic starting striker for Chelsea across the last two seasons, but it feels like he’s now under some real pressure.
Recent reports claim that Jackson has no intention of leaving Chelsea anytime soon, so we’re excited to see the forwards battle it out.
