'Discredits the competition': French media angry that £60m Chelsea man was allowed to play in CWC final

Chelsea were absolutely dominant in the big finale to their very strong Club World Cup campaign over in the United States.

Enzo Maresca set his side up perfectly against Champions League winners PSG, and this was shown in the scoreline as they ran out 3-0 winners.

Cole Palmer was the man of the moment, scoring twice in the first half and putting a sensational shift in when it came to his defensive work too.

There were a number of other impressive performers too. Malo Gusto stepped up with his best performance in a Chelsea shirt, while Robert Sanchez silenced his doubters too.

Joao Pedro’s start to life at Chelsea has gone better than he could ever have expected, scoring three goals in his first two starts for the club in the semi-final and final.

French media angry that Joao Pedro was allowed to play in Club World Cup final

As far as impacts from new signings go, the Blues couldn’t have asked for more from their £60m man, who will surely now be a shoo-in to start the first Premier League game of next season.

French media were actually annoyed that the Brazilian was even allowed to play for Chelsea. Le Parisien stated that they believe new signings being allowed to feature for their clubs ‘discredits the competition’.

They said: “There’s everything PSG did wrong, but it’s not enough. Chelsea took the match by storm, fearlessly, advancing on Paris as a constant threat.

“The Blues quickly identified weaknesses on the left side of the Parisian defense—Nuno Mendes too high, Lucas Beraldo too indolent—to exploit their superiority and lead 2-0 in less than ten minutes (22nd, 30th) and put the nail in the coffin just before halftime through João Pedro, the Londoners’ new signing who has been allowed to play since the round of 16. A peculiarity of the rules that discredits this competition.”

Joao Pedro involved in post-match brawl

With PSG clearly not used to losing big games after their excellent domestic campaign, they did not handle things well after the final whistle.

A big clash involving players and members of staff from both teams took place, with the Brazilian involved in the heart of it.

PSG boss Luis Enrique seemed to strike Pedro, before Maresca finally helped restore order and sent his players to celebrate with their supporters.

If Chelsea can have that impact on the team seen as the best in Europe, then they should feel more confident than ever that they are heading in the right direction to be back at the top of the world’s game.
