Rio Ferdinand delivers verdict on Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson amid Manchester United links

It will be fascinating to see if Nicolas Jackson is still on Chelsea’s books post-summer transfer window.

Nicolas Jackson, 24, has been the clear first-choice striker at Chelsea during the previous two seasons, but his position is severely under threat following the arrivals of both Joao Pedro and Liam Delap at Stamford Bridge this summer.

As a result, the Senegal international has been at the heart of recent transfer speculation.

Apparently, Jackson would prefer to leave Chelsea this summer, and the Blues are happy to sell him, but they will demand at least £65m.

Manchester United have spoken with Jackson’s representative about a potential switch to Old Trafford. In addition, Jackson would be open to joining Man Utd, who will not play European football next season after a tough time last year.

Rio Ferdinand is a fan of Nicolas Jackson

Rio Ferdinand, the former Man Utd star, has delivered a very positive verdict on Blues frontman Jackson amid rumours linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

When discussing striker targets linked with Man Utd, Ferdinand mentioned Chelsea’s Jackson. He said: “I think he’s been quite unlucky. His stats in terms of players coming in for their third season at Chelsea match up to anybody, [Didier] Drogba, all of them.

“He done really well last year. He’s a nuisance. I would argue that he would be most centre-backs’ top three or four players they found hardest to play against last year. I don’t think he’s an easy day’s work for anybody.

“Yes, he’s got a lot to do. A lot to clean up on him in terms of his finishing. He’s not clean in his all-round play, but he is a nuisance.”

Even though talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil couldn’t see Jackson fitting Man Utd, he’s definitely good enough to play for any team in the Premier League.

He’s proven in Chelsea colours that he’s capable of leading the line with a neat all-round game. However, his inconsistency in front of goal often lets him down, so it’s no surprise that the Blues added two new forwards to the squad this summer.

What Alan Shearer said about Nicolas Jackson last season

The fact that legendary striker Alan Shearer once gave Jackson the seal of approval is quite telling.

Back in January 2025, Shearer raved about Jackson and insisted the Chelsea centre-forward has got a bright future. He said: “I like him. I think he’s improving. I know he misses chances, a lot of chances, actually… I think he is getting better. There’s lots to admire about his game. I like his attitude. He keeps getting in there despite missing chances… He just had to keep improving on the finishing and the work on the training ground, and he’ll get better. Eventually he’ll get there.”

We’re pretty confident that Jackson can kick on and enjoy a great career at the top level. However, it does feel like he may need a fresh move after blowing his opportunity in West London during the past two seasons.
