Stan Collymore offers suggestion to Thomas Tuchel about 'extraordinary' Chelsea star Cole Palmer
Chelsea and England star Cole Palmer is still waiting to truly explode onto the international stage in the same way he has at club level.
Cole Palmer, 23, has become one of the world’s most exciting footballers since joining Chelsea two years ago.
The attacking midfielder has truly become the talisman at Stamford Bridge, carrying the Blues team on his shoulders at times. It’s exciting that Jody Morris thinks Palmer will go to another level next season, too.
As for his international career, Palmer has only shown a glimpse of what he can truly do. The left-footed playmaker scored a goal in the 2024 Euro final; unfortunately, it was in a losing cause against Spain.
| Team | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Chelsea | 97 | 43 | 29 |
| England national side | 12 | 2 | 1 |
At the moment, the Chelsea playmaker is trying to establish himself in England’s strongest team, which isn’t straightforward when he’s competing with the likes of Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Bukayo Saka.
During his Chelsea career so far, we’ve seen that Palmer can massively shine as a right-winger or a No.10. In fact, Palmer even impressed on the left wing when he featured there against Benfica at this summer’s Club World Cup.

Stan Collymore suggests Cole Palmer should play on England’s left wing
According to Stan Collymore, England manager Thomas Tuchel needs to nail down his best starting XI, especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States.
He’s suggested that Chelsea playmaker Palmer should be in the strongest Three Lions line-up, and he would fit him in on the left wing. As mentioned above, it’s a position he’s played before, but it’s very rare because he’s usually central or drifting over to the right.
Collymore told CaughtOffside: “If I was Thomas Tuchel, I would be honing down on the players that I want for my side…
“I would play Cole Palmer on the left; he’s a winger for all intents and purposes. Forget the fact that he plays as a 10 and he drops deep, etc. He’s extraordinarily left-footed player and he can go past people with ease.
“He would not be the first player in world football history to play one position for his club and another position for his nation. I think he should be just told quite simply: play on the left, hug the touchline, go past the full-back, put the cross in the box. There’s nothing stopping you from drifting in and playing a one-two and scoring your goals.”

Back in December 2024, Jamie Carragher urged Tuchel to build England around Palmer and Bellingham. We’re certainly onboard with that idea, too.
We would much prefer Palmer to operate centrally behind Harry Kane rather than shoehorning him into the XI on the left. On paper, Palmer, Bellingham, and Declan Rice works as a midfield combination.

Chelsea fans will be baffled that anybody could look past Cole Palmer
For Blues supporters who have watched Palmer’s brilliance in the last two seasons, they must be staggered at Collymore’s suggestion for England to use him on the left.
Palmer has been tremendous as the focal point of Chelsea’s team, proving he can step up against the very best. In particular, Palmer was outstanding in the Club World Cup final this month when he tormented a world-class Paris Saint-Germain side.
The Chelsea fanbase must be confident that Palmer would have no issue starring in Tuchel’s England side if he’s given a consecutive run of starts.
We would love to see the Blues playmaker in England’s side as the chief No.10 for the foreseeable future, and his big-game record suggests he’s worth the investment.
