£19m Chelsea loanee subbed off just 36 minutes into his debut for new club

One Chelsea loanee finally got his season underway on Tuesday evening, however didn’t even get to play half the game after starting his debut.

The Blues have plenty of players out on loan for the 2025/26 campaign, with youngsters looking to gain all-important minutes to leave an impression on those at Stamford Bridge.

The contingent at Strasbourg have made a very strong start to the season. Mike Penders has been the star with three clean sheets already, however Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez have started off well too.

Some loanees ended up staying in England after making their moves, giving them an opportunity to play regularly further down the pyramid than where Chelsea currently are.

One player who fits this bill is Omari Kellyman, who has endured a rough time of things since his move to Stamford Bridge for £19m two years ago.

He was hardly able to make an appearance last season for the academy at Chelsea, however he was named in the starting XI for loan side Cardiff to face Exeter City in the Football League Trophy.

While his side won 1-0, this was not really a result of the Chelsea man’s performance. He was subbed off in the first half.

It has been said that Enzo Maresca is good friends with Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy, and will trust that his former colleague at Manchester City has what’s best for the player in mind at all times.

Barry-Murphy explains early Kellyman substitution

Despite Kellyman not even making it to half-time of his debut, he was not replaced due to any injury sustained in the game.

Instead, Brian-Murphy explained that it was pre-planned for him to come off at this stage, with his new side very keen to protect him after a nightmare run of injuries in the last 24 months.

He said to Wales Online: “Also Troy, coming on at such an early stage of the game, to make sure we didn’t take any risks with Omari, was also very involved in the game.

“I think it’s always important to remind ourselves that a competition like this can be overlooked, but it can give someone like Troy a first taste for playing for our club.
