Bayern Munich to secretly make use of ‘advantage’ they have for Chelsea clash

Chelsea are kicking off their Champions League campaign with a trip to Munich, where they will face off against recent departure Nicolas Jackson.

The league phase of Europe’s elite competition gets underway this week, and the first challenge for Enzo Maresca’s side comes against the German champions.

Chelsea will be excited to return to the competition after a two-year hiatus, but will also recognise the challenge of facing a Bayern side with a 100% win record to start the season.

That task could be made more difficult by Nicolas Jackson’s inclusion, for a reason outlined by Bayern’s sporting director.

Sporting Director Max Eberl says Nicolas Jackson can give Bayern an advantage against Chelsea

Chelsea will go into this game as slight underdogs, simply due to it being played at the Allianz Arena.

But Bayern are looking for more advantage than just a home fixture, and Max Eberl thinks he has found it in Chelsea reject Jackson.

As TZ reports, Eberl thinks Jackson will have insider information that could help Vincent Kompany in a tactical sense.

He explains: “I’m sure Vinni and the coaching staff will ask him. There are always certain processes that you might still see in the analysis.

“What signals do they have? What do these signals mean? I certainly believe the coaching staff is taking advantage of this.”

An odd thing to disclose publicly, and something that might rub Chelsea fans the wrong way. Whether it can be an effective strategy for the German side remains to be seen.

Chelsea are facing a much more experienced team in the Champions League

Chelsea’s approach to adding players to the squad has been heavily focused on youth in recent seasons.

That’s evident in how the Blues play, with a hunger and energy that can overwhelm teams whose players have far more miles in their legs.

An issue with that squad profile is the lack of match experience.

There are just players two players in Chelsea’s Champions League squad with ten or more appearances in the competition. Reece James and Jamie Gittens.

Bayern, on the other hand, are stacked from top to bottom with experienced performers in Europe. There are 847 appearances and 113 goals on their collective resume.

Chelsea’s Club World Cup success showed they can compete at the highest level, but they cannot underestimate this Bayern side’s pedigree.
